Foundation Stock
In the Spring of 1994 Charles Turner, Dennis Funderburgh and Sam Cook formed a partnership called Texas Boer Bok Stud. Our goal at the time was to make available to the industry some of the top genetics in the world. In order to acheive this goal, Turner, Funderburgh and Cook traveled to South Africa and acquired an outstanding set of goats from seven top breeders. They include Lucas Burger, Francois Maritz, Cornelius du Toit, Hennie Maritz, Herman Groenwald, Louis van Rensburg and AWA Maritz. We were able to select from their top genetics which serves as the foundation for Turner Livestock today.
Sir
Sir is a very stylish buck that blends well. He is thick down his top and has a heavily muscled leg with tremendous balance throughout. He sired Oscar, the 1998 ABGA National Grand Champion buck.
Stallion is a massive individual that has good natural width, tremendous bone and a sound skeleton. He displays excellent muscle shape over the loin and meaty, deep leg. Almost all the goats in our breeding program have Stallion or Sir in their pedigree: Many have both.
Stallion
Popeye
Popeye is the sire of many of the does we originally purchased in South Africa. He was owned by Cornelius du Toit and Louis van Rensburg. This one is a true breeding buck. He consistently generates goats with design and structure that everyone needs.
Duke is a large framed, meaty buck that puts it all together. This buck is extremely heavy boned and very correct in his body design. He is the sire of Prima. She was Grand Champion at Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and San Angelo.
Duke
Turner Livestocks primary focus has been to develop a herd of females with style, balance, internal capacity, breed character, and a skeleton that can withstand whatever conditions they are asked to live in. We also have concentrated on certain genetics within different groups of females, in an effort to increase the predictability. This has been a great help, not only in improving quality of our offspring, but also being able to really evaluate the worth of a new sire.
Charles Turner has been involved with Boer goats since their first importation to the United States in 1993. The first group of goats was purchased from Landcorp Farming Ltd., in New Zealand in January of 1993. Buyers of those first Boer goats from the United States were: Jurgen Schultz, West-Texas Boer Syndicate; comprised of Norman & Kathy Kohls, Ernie & Debra Schwartz, Larry & Kim Halfmann, Hugh & Ann Schafer, Mike & Denise Balta, and Jimmy & Donna Eggemeyer. A partnership of Don Jackman, Dennis Funderburgh, Charles Turner & Buck Pruitt; also Walter Pope, W.E. & Carolyn Whitehead, Bill & Mary Powis, Rosie Jones, Babe Howard, Hadley & Benton Wardlaw. On March 17th, 1993, a meeting was held in San Antonio to discuss the future of the Boer goat and to make plans to possibly establish a registry and governing system. Those present at the meeting were asked to donate $25.00 each to get started and to sign their name, address and phone number.
On June 19th, 1993 in Junction, Texas the first organizational meeting was held to establish the American Boer Goat Association. A board of directors was elected. Norman Kohls was elected president and Walter Pope was elected vice-president. Directors elected were Jimmy Day, Stan Keen, Don Jackman, Charles Turner, W.E. Whitehead, Ernie Schwartz, Lou Niti, Jane Meacham, Buck Pruitt, Mike Masters, Mary Powis, Steve Quinn and Sammy Helmers. Charles continued to serve as a board member for the next five years and has served as a National Show judge once in 1998 and a National Junior Show Judge in 1998 and 1999.
